    Early Life

Debby Ryan was born Deborah Ann Ryan on May 13, 1993, in Huntsville, Alabama. She is the daughter of John and Missy Ryan and has one older brother, Chase.

Because her father worked as a civilian consultant for the U.S. military, Ryan spent part of her childhood living in Germany. While there, she discovered a passion for acting and began performing in professional theater productions on an American military base at just seven years old.

After returning to the United States, her family settled in Texas, where she attended Fossil Ridge High School. Ryan has spoken openly about experiencing bullying during her school years, experiences that later influenced her advocacy work.

    Acting Career Beginnings

Ryan’s entertainment career began with television commercials before she landed a recurring role on the children’s series “Barney & Friends” in 2006. She also appeared in the direct-to-video film “Barney: Let’s Go to the Firehouse.”

Her first major film appearance came in 2008 when she co-starred alongside Ice Cube and Keke Palmer in “The Longshots.” That same year, she secured the role that would launch her career to a global audience.

    Disney Channel Success

Ryan became a household name after being cast as Bailey Pickett in Disney Channel’s “The Suite Life on Deck.” The popular spin-off aired from 2008 to 2011, with Ryan appearing in all 71 episodes.

The series ranked among Disney Channel’s highest-rated programs during its run and significantly increased Ryan’s popularity with younger audiences. She also reprised Bailey in crossover episodes of “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “Hannah Montana,” as well as the television film “The Suite Life Movie.”

While starring on the series, Ryan headlined the Disney Channel Original Movie “16 Wishes,” which became one of the network’s most successful premieres internationally. She also appeared in the inspirational drama “What If…”

‘Jessie’ Made Her a Disney Star

In 2011, Ryan landed another defining role when she was cast as Jessie Prescott in Disney Channel’s hit sitcom “Jessie.”

She portrayed an aspiring actress from Texas who becomes a nanny for a wealthy New York family. The series ran for four seasons and nearly 100 episodes, further cementing Ryan’s place among Disney’s biggest stars.

Beyond acting, Ryan expanded her responsibilities by directing several episodes of the series, marking an important milestone in her career behind the camera.

During this period, she also starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie “Radio Rebel,” voiced characters in animated projects, and made guest appearances on numerous Disney productions.

    Netflix and Post-Disney Career

After leaving Disney, Ryan pursued more mature roles across film and television.

She starred in NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura” before taking leading roles in projects including:

    • “Sing It!”
    • “Rip Tide”
    • “Life of the Party” alongside Melissa McCarthy
    • Netflix’s dark comedy “Insatiable”
    • “Horse Girl”
    • “The Opening Act”

Her role as Patty Bladell in “Insatiable” introduced Ryan to a broader adult audience and demonstrated her ability to move beyond family-oriented programming.

    Music Career

In addition to acting, Ryan has maintained a music career.

She formed the band The Never Ending, releasing the EP “One” in 2014. Ryan also recorded numerous songs for Disney albums and released solo music throughout her career.

Her musical talents extend beyond singing, as she plays several instruments, including piano and guitar.

    Directing

Ryan has increasingly worked behind the scenes as a director and producer.

She directed multiple episodes of “Jessie” and helmed music videos for both her solo work and her band. Her expanding production credits have allowed her to diversify her entertainment career while developing skills beyond acting.

    Personal Life

Ryan became engaged to Josh Dun, drummer for the rock duo Twenty One Pilots, in 2018. The couple married on December 31, 2019, in Austin, Texas.

She has been open about her Christian faith and has supported numerous charitable causes throughout her career.

Ryan has worked with Disney’s Friends for Change and participated in humanitarian projects, including helping build a school in India. She has also partnered with anti-domestic violence campaigns after sharing her own experiences in an abusive relationship.

In 2016, Ryan was arrested following a DUI-related incident in Los Angeles. She later pleaded no contest to reckless driving, received probation, completed a DUI education program, and fulfilled community service requirements.

    Real Estate

Ryan has also invested in California real estate.

In 2015, she purchased a home in Los Angeles for approximately $1.175 million. She listed the property in late 2019 and ultimately sold it in 2020 for roughly $1.4 million, earning a modest profit on the investment.
