Detectives in Gem Sub-County have arrested a suspected key organiser linked to the violent demonstrations witnessed in Yala on April 6, 2026.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was apprehended during a targeted operation following intelligence leads.

The agency identified the suspect as 30-year-old Silas Asitiba, who was arrested at a local drinking den in Ramula during the coordinated raid.

According to the DCI, Asitiba is believed to have played a central role in mobilising a group that attacked Ramula Police Post, causing extensive damage to property.

“The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing processing, and is set to face a litany of charges, including arson, assault, malicious damage to property and incitement to violence, among others,” the statement said.

The DCI added that investigations are ongoing, with officers pursuing several other individuals suspected to have organised and financed the unrest.

DCI urged members of the public to refrain from engaging in unlawful demonstrations, noting that while the right to protest is protected under the Constitution, acts of violence, hooliganism and attacks on police installations will attract legal consequences.
