    Early Life

Dick Butkus was born Richard Marvin Butkus on December 9, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois.

He was the youngest of eight children in a working-class Lithuanian-American family. His father, John Butkus, worked as an electrician for the Pullman-Standard railroad car company, while his mother, Emma, worked in a laundromat.

Growing up on Chicago’s South Side in the Roseland neighborhood, Butkus developed a reputation for toughness early in life. He attended Chicago Vocational High School, where he played multiple positions on the football team and quickly emerged as a standout athlete.

In 1959, he became the first junior ever named Chicago high school player of the year by the Chicago Sun-Times, marking him as a rising football star.

    Collegiate Career at Illinois

Despite heavy recruiting interest, Butkus chose to attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he played center and linebacker for the Fighting Illini from 1962 to 1964.

His college career peaked in the 1963–64 season, when he led Illinois to an 8–1–1 record and a Rose Bowl victory. That year, he was named:

    • Team MVP
    • Big Ten MVP
    • Lineman of the Year (UPI)
    • Player of the Year (American Football Coaches Association)

As a senior, he again earned team MVP honors and established himself as one of the most dominant defensive players in college football history.

NFL Career with the Chicago Bears

Dick Butkus was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1965 NFL Draft, launching one of the most iconic careers in league history.

From 1965 to 1973, Butkus became the heart of the Bears’ defense. His playing style—aggressive, physical, and intimidating—set a new standard for linebackers.

    Career highlights include:

    • 8 Pro Bowl selections
    • 6 All-Pro honors
    • Multiple seasons as the NFL’s most feared defensive player
    • Induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979

Although team success was limited during his playing years, Butkus’s individual dominance made him one of the most respected figures in the sport.

Butkus also worked in sports broadcasting, including radio coverage of Chicago Bears games and appearances on NFL pregame programming.

In addition, he became a popular figure in advertising, representing brands such as Miller Lite, Prestone, and Echo Tools.

    • Pro Football Hall of Fame (1979)
