Kisii County’s Bonchari parliamentary aspirant Donya Toto has mounted a spirited defence of President William Ruto, urging residents to support his administration as she stepped up her grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Donya made the remarks on Monday during an empowerment forum in Bonchari that brought together women leaders, political figures and residents from across the constituency.

Kitutu Chache North MP Japhet Nyakundi attended the event, alongside State House operative Farouk Kibet, who rallied residents behind President Ruto and urged them to support his bid for a second term.

Kibet said the President deserved another term to complete and consolidate programmes initiated by his administration, urging residents to assess the government based on its development and empowerment agenda.

Donya, who is seeking to unseat incumbent Bonchari MP Charles Onchoke in 2027, said the government had created opportunities for ordinary Kenyans through its various empowerment programmes.

“Leadership must be about creating opportunities for our people. We cannot condemn every government initiative simply because we disagree politically,” Donya told residents.

She cited the ongoing construction of the Mau Summit-Rironi highway as one of the major infrastructure projects undertaken by the administration, comparing its scale with the Thika Superhighway developed during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki.

“Those who allege that the President has done nothing should be ashamed of themselves,” she said as she addressed hundreds of supporters at the forum.

The aspirant said Bonchari needed leaders capable of connecting residents to government opportunities while advocating for improved infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic empowerment.

“We need leaders who can connect our people to opportunities, champion development and ensure that Bonchari is not left behind,” she said.

The meeting was also attended by several women representatives, who engaged residents on issues affecting women, young people and vulnerable groups.

Nyakundi’s presence added political weight to the gathering as politicians intensify their grassroots activities and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

For Donya, the empowerment forum offered an opportunity to strengthen her support base while positioning herself as a candidate capable of combining local development priorities with support from the national government.

The Bonchari contest is expected to attract increased political activity in the coming months, with aspirants likely to rely on grassroots mobilisation, empowerment initiatives and alliances with influential political actors as they seek to win over voters.
