The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has condemned remarks allegedly made by Senator Karen Nyamu concerning a student participating in the Voluntary Service Scheme, saying the sentiments undermined the dignity and wellbeing of children.
In a statement issued by KEWOPA Chairperson Leah Sankaire, the association said it was concerned by the remarks made in the Senate by one of its members and distanced itself from the sentiments.
KEWOPA said children deserve respect, protection, and an environment that nurtures their dreams and potential.
“As an association committed to advancing inclusive, transformative, and values-driven leadership, we believe that children deserve respect, protection, and an environment that nurtures their dreams and potential,” the statement read.
The association emphasized that women’s leadership should remain grounded in care, mentorship, accountability, and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
It further reaffirmed its commitment to promoting policies and public discourse that uphold the rights and dignity of children in line with the Constitution and child protection laws.
The lawmakers’ association noted that young girls across the country look up to leaders for guidance, mentorship, and inspiration, adding that public institutions should remain safe and empowering spaces for children.
“Children who visit Parliament should leave encouraged to believe in their potential and their place in leadership and national development,” KEWOPA stated.
The association warned that sentiments exposing children to ridicule, objectification, or discomfort weaken efforts aimed at creating safe and inclusive spaces for young people.
KEWOPA also urged leaders and public officers to exercise responsibility and sensitivity in their public utterances, especially where children are concerned.
