Detectives have arrested a man accused of posing as a taxi driver and stealing more than Sh500,000 from a passenger in Lavington, Nairobi.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Fred Atandi Morara, was arrested on Tuesday by officers from DCI headquarters. His arrest followed a report filed by a male complainant who said the incident happened on the night of August 8, 2025.

The complainant told police he had left a social joint with a friend and was about to order an Uber when Morara, who was waiting nearby, offered to take them to their Airbnb at a cheaper rate. After dropping them off, the suspect allegedly made away with the victim’s phone and later transferred more than Sh500,000 from his bank accounts to various accounts, which were later deactivated.

When arrested, Morara was found driving a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake number plates. Detectives also recovered several mobile phones, sim cards, and a sisal rope.

The suspect has since been handed over to DCI Dagoretti for further investigations and processing.
