A fire that started in Lake View Estate on Friday afternoon spread into Lake Nakuru National Park, affecting the Honeymoon Hill area.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the fire broke out at around 4:00 p.m. and spread quickly due to dry conditions.

KWS officers, with the help of local residents, the city fire team and Bondeni Police, responded promptly to the incident.

The fire was successfully contained by 10:00 p.m., preventing further damage to the park.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KWS warned the public against lighting fires during the dry season, noting that strong winds and dry vegetation can cause fires to spread rapidly.

KWS said such fires pose serious risks to human life, wildlife, property and the environment, and can destroy animal habitats, reduce grazing areas and increase human-wildlife conflict.

“We are pleased to report that no injuries or deaths were recorded, and we thank all partners and community members for their quick response and cooperation in protecting the park,” KWS said.
