A former senior DCI officer Joseph Ngisa is dead.

Among others, Ngisa served as the head of Directorate of Criminal Investigations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before retiring in 2016.

He was of the rank of Assistant Inspector of police at the time of his retirement, his colleagues and family said.

He died at a hospital in Kisii after what the family said was a heart failure.

The family said he had been battling diabetes and high blood pressure after his retirement. He had been admitted to Nangina Mission Hospital where he died, the family added.

He was a licensed firearm holder and police visited his home and recovered his CZ pistol with 48 rounds of ammunition for safe keeping.

The team also recovered a valid certificate to hold the firearm.

Ngisa was described as a hardworking police officer who retired with distinction.

His colleagues in the service mourned him as a good man.

Elsewhere in Transmara’s Angata Barrikoi area, police recovered an AK47 rifle abandoned in a thicket as the alleged owners escaped from the scene. The owner of the illegal gun is said to have initially shot at a rider and missed him in the September 3 incident.

This prompted the rider and his pillion passenger to dash to the local police station and inform police of the incident.

Police mounted an operation recovering the weapon loaded with 30 bullets in a thicket.

Police said the owner and accomplices managed to escape the scene and efforts to trace them are ongoing.

The area has been experiencing a rise in attacks by gunmen targeting cattle. This has spread to the nearby Kuria area, Migori County.

A major operation is planned in the area to address the menace, police said.
