Police are investigating an incident where former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were lost his son following a brutal night attack in Kisumu.

Hannington Were, 39, died after he and a friend were attacked late Saturday night while walking along Nyerere Road towards Mamba Hotel to buy food, according to witnesses and family members.

The incident was reported at Obunga Police Station on Sunday morning.

According to his father, Hannington and his friend had opted to walk because there were no boda boda operators available along the route at the time. However, when they reached the Makini School area, they were allegedly confronted and attacked by a group of boda boda riders.

“They decided to walk because there were no boda boda along the way. However, when they reached Makini School, they were attacked by boda boda riders. The hospital says he was dead at the time he arrived at the facility. He was stabbed twice in the back,” said Were.

The former legislator added that his son had also suffered head injuries after being struck with a metal rod.

The victims were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where doctors confirmed Hannington was dead on arrival. His friend remains admitted at the facility in critical condition after sustaining serious injuries.

Were described his son as a private and disciplined man who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund and had no known disputes either at work or within the community.

“His wife was already asleep. She did not know that Hannington had left. Hannington is a very private person and does not always walk at night. I do not know what prompted him to leave,” he said.

He also appealed to security agencies to intensify patrols and address the growing wave of violent attacks in Kisumu.

Police officers visited both the scene and the hospital as investigations into the killing commenced. Authorities said it remains unclear whether anything was stolen from the victims during the attack.

Meanwhile, a night watchman is recovering after being seriously injured during a robbery at Migingo Fish Supplies Shop in the Obunga area of Kisumu.

The robbery occurred near the old Toyota Kenya premises, where attackers reportedly jumped over a locked gate before assaulting the guard with an iron bar, inflicting severe head injuries.

The injured watchman was also rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

Police said the robbers broke into the office and escaped with several items, including television sets, a CCTV monitor, electric kettles, shoes, an unserviceable mobile phone and Sh2,000 in cash.

Investigators suspect former employees who had previously worked at the premises before leaving after a disagreement may have been involved in the robbery.

Police said the scene was preserved for forensic examination as detectives continue pursuing the suspects.
