Detectives in Kitui Central have arrested four people who posed as senior Kenya Prisons Service officers and conspired to cheat a businessman out of Sh105,000 through a fake tender scheme.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects approached the victim claiming they could help him secure a tender to supply vegetables to Kitui GK Prison. Posing as prison officers, they convinced the businessman to part with the money as part of the deal.

By the time the victim realised the offer was fraudulent, the money had already been taken.

However, detectives who had been tracking the suspects moved in and arrested them before they could defraud more people. The four — Clement Wachira, Andrew Kimani, Ann Waweru and Rehema Makandi — were arrested while travelling in a black Toyota Harrier.

During the arrest, police recovered several items believed to have been used in the scam. These included 37 fake Kenya Prisons Service tender approval forms, two fake Prisons Service job identity cards, eight mobile phones and six national identity cards belonging to different individuals.

“Now cooling their heels in custody, the four are preparing to swap their fake Kenya Prison Service documents for very real court appearances,” DCI said.

Meanwhile, detectives are probing the case further to establish whether other people may have been conned using the same fake tender scheme.
