Detectives in Nyali, Mombasa, have arrested a woman accused of taking part in a planned robbery against her British boyfriend.
The suspect, identified as Samira Mumbi Kiarie, is said to have invited the man to her apartment in Nyali after months of online communication. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the man believed he was visiting for a romantic date, unaware that the meeting had been organized as part of a robbery scheme.
Soon after he arrived, two men entered the apartment. One claimed to be Samira’s husband, while the other allegedly identified himself as a police officer. The two then accused the foreigner of being involved in a relationship with a married woman and threatened to take action against him.
Under pressure, the man was forced to transfer Sh800,000 to mobile numbers given by the group. After the transaction was completed, the suspects reportedly escorted him out of the building and disappeared.
Following investigations, detectives arrested Samira and one of the alleged accomplices, identified as Paul Webster Mangeni. One other suspect is still being sought by police.
“Investigations have since established that the two are part of a notorious syndicate that lures foreigners through dating sites, sets them up in Airbnbs, and robbing them of their hard-earned money,” DCI said.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be charged once investigations are completed.
