The government has announced enhanced security and safety measures to ensure a safe festive season.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said it had put in place six key measures aimed at curbing accidents, crime, and other security risks during this period, which is marked by increased travel, crowded social spots, and a rise in both domestic and international tourism.
“The overall security situation across the country remains calm and stable, but based on past trends, we are aware that this period may see isolated increases in security incidents, traffic violations, and opportunistic criminal activities,” the ministry said.
The National Multi-Agency Command Centre (NMACC) has been activated to coordinate surveillance, intelligence sharing, and rapid response before, during, and after the festive season. The Centre includes officers from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Intelligence Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, National Youth Service, and the National Government Administration. Similar coordination centres have also been set up at regional and county levels to strengthen operational command and control.
The Ministry said that officers from multiple agencies have been deployed across the country, including at airports, border crossings, high-traffic areas such as hotels, shopping malls, public beaches, tourist sites, central business districts, places of worship, entertainment joints, and critical infrastructure. All officers previously on leave have resumed duty, supported by general duty police and specialized units. The Ministry of Defence is providing logistical and air support, as well as securing the country from external threats.
In addition, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), together with the Traffic Police, has launched a nationwide operation to ensure smooth traffic flow and road safety on highways and in urban areas. The operation includes multi-agency coordination, enforcement of traffic laws, deployment of mobile courts where necessary, and anti-corruption monitoring by EACC officers.
The government also launched a nationwide crackdown on illicit brews and drugs, led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in partnership with local administrators and police officers. The operation targets production, sale, and consumption of dangerous substances that threaten public safety.
Security teams are also intensifying operations against organized criminal gangs and tackling social crimes such as female genital mutilation (FGM), defilement, early pregnancies, forced marriages, domestic violence, and religious extremism across Nairobi, the Coast, Western, Nyanza, Central, and Eastern regions.
The Ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement officers throughout the festive season. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys, adjust travel schedules, and use alternative routes to avoid congestion. For example, travelers from Nairobi to the Western and Nyanza regions are encouraged to use the Nairobi-Suswa-Narok route instead of the Mai Mahiu escarpment, while those traveling through the Central region can consider the Nairobi-Nyeri-Nyahururu-Nakuru route for smoother and safer travel.
“Owners of shopping malls, entertainment venues, and event organizers are also urged to work closely with area security teams to manage crowds and strengthen existing security arrangements,” the Ministry said.
