The government has announced changes in the preparations for Labour Day 2025, which will be marked on May 1.

The announcement was made by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfread Mutua after a meeting with COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

The CS said that two key areas have been reviewed, focusing on better national coordination and unified messaging for the celebrations.

“Today, I held a productive meeting with Hon. Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), where we discussed key issues ahead of both national and international labour events. We reviewed preparations for Labour Day 2025, scheduled for May 1, with a strong focus on coordination across the country and a clear message for all workers,” CS Mutua said.

The meeting also addressed Kenya’s participation in the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC), which will be held in Geneva from June 2 to June 12, 2025.

The CS confirmed that Kenya will continue supporting the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) budget, noting its critical role in promoting fair labour practices worldwide.

“Finally, we agreed on the importance of Kenya actively joining global conversations around regulating the platform economy to ensure fair and inclusive policies for all workers,” he added.

Labour Day is celebrated every year to honour workers’ rights and achievements, and this year’s events are expected to carry strong national and international significance.
