World women 5000m champion Hellen Obiri put aside team Kenya’s troubles in Asaba, Nigeria to win the 5000m race for the country’s first gold in the African athletics championships.

The 30-year-old Commonwealth champion stormed to victory against nine other athletes in 15:47.17.

The Kenya Defense Forces runner summoned her sheer ingenuity as she opened a 15-metre gap – which raised Kenyan hopes after the chaotic arrival in the Western African nation.

Senbere Teferi Sora of Ethiopia won silver in 15:54.46 with another Ethiopian Meskerem Mamo taking silver in 15:57.38.

The win was sweet revenge for Kenya against their arch rivals Ethiopia, who won gold and silver in the 10000m on Wednesday.
