The National Police Service (NPS) has announced new efforts to fight corruption by adopting digital technology and enhancing internal accountability systems.
In a statement released on May 23, 2025, NPS Director of Corporate Communication Muchiri Nyaga said the service is taking a multi-pronged approach to improve efficiency and eliminate corrupt practices within the police force.
“To strengthen anti-corruption efforts, the NPS has established internal accountability mechanisms, including Quality Assurance Directorates and the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU),” Nyaga said.
The police service is also leveraging technology to allow the public to report misconduct. Nyaga noted that NPS has set up toll-free hotlines — 112, 999, and 911 — to report corruption cases. In addition, the IAU’s Anonymous Reporting Information System (ARIS) and the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline (0800 722 203) allow citizens to give tips without revealing their identity.
To further reduce corruption, the NPS is now digitizing its services. Nyaga said the move aims to automate key functions such as fine payments, cash bail processing, and other services that involve direct interaction with the public — areas often linked to bribery.
The service has also partnered with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to carry out a system review aimed at identifying and sealing loopholes that enable corruption.
Nyaga added that the Inspector General (IG) has issued a firm warning to all police commanders, reminding them that they will be held personally accountable if officers under their command engage in corrupt practices.
