Police questioned a Homa Bay Member of County Assembly after he claimed he had been hit and injured by what he thought to be a gunshot while in Nairobi.

The MCA identified as Vickins Bondo was in Nairobi near his residence when the incident happened Saturday night.

The police traced and found him at about 1 pm Sunday and learnt the injury he had was not from a gunshot. The police said he sustained the injury during a scuffle with people unknown to him in the Jamhuri area off Ngong Road.

A team that talked to him sought to know why he informed hospital officials he was shot. He changed the narrative, saying he was confused.

The team also sought to know why he did not report the matter and he told them he was tired and wanted to rest.

Police said they are consulting and may charge him with giving false information. The investigators learnt that Bondo was in the company of friends and were waiting for a taxi when three men approached them on Saturday at about 10 pm.

The men arrived aboard a motorcycle and confronted the MCA and his visitors, prompting him to attempt to escape.

He then fell and was hit in the head by what is believed to be a metal bar or blunt object. He was later taken to the hospital while bleeding.

Bondo had, through his handlers, released a statement dismissing as misinformation reports that suggested he was shot.

“There was an unfortunate incident of robbery with violence where Vickins was one of the victims. He sustained an injury while trying to get to safety but the injury did not arise from a gunshot. Vickins was attended to at a reputable health facility and discharged.”

“He is currently recuperating under the care of family and friends. Any other information to the contrary should be disregarded with disdain,” said the statement.

He went to the Coptic Hospital on Ngong Road with an injury to the head, saying he had been shot. Doctors who attended to him said the injury was not severe and that he was discharged after being attended to.

They advised him to make a report to the police. The MCA however, did report the matter.

A team of detectives visited the hospital to get more information on the victim and the nature of the injury.

“He is in good spirits and has admitted he was hit by what he believes to be a piece of iron sheet or blunt object,” said an officer in the investigations team.

He was taken to the Jamhuri police station, where he recorded his statement and was released.

Bondo is the West Kasipul MCA and won on an independent ticket.

A lawyer by profession and a former student leader at the University of Nairobi’s Parklands Campus, he is the youngest MCA at the Homa Bay County Assembly.

In July last year, the High Court in Homa Bay reinstated Bondo as the West Kasipul MCA after reversing an earlier ruling made by a Magistrate Court sitting in Oyugis.

The IEBC had declared Bondo the winner after garnering 4,041 votes against his closest challenger Peter Ongili who got 3,975 votes but the Oyugis court nullified the election on January 31, 2023 on grounds that it was marred with irregularities.

The MCA and IEBC later moved to the High Court in Homa Bay to appeal the decision by the lower court where Justice Waweru Kiarie reversed the ruling.
