Nairobi’s cold season, which typically runs from June through August, brings a noticeable shift in weather patterns. Daytime temperatures often stay below 22°C while nighttime temperatures can drop to below 10°C. The combination of chilly winds, persistent drizzles, and heavy overcast skies creates conditions that make many households more vulnerable to respiratory infections. During this period, cases of the common cold, influenza, pneumonia, and asthma flare-ups tend to rise significantly.

While it is not always possible to completely avoid seasonal illnesses, there are practical home-based remedies and lifestyle adjustments that can strengthen the body’s natural defenses and reduce the likelihood of catching a cold.

Strengthening immunity through warm and nourishing foods

One of the most effective ways to protect the body during cold weather is by supporting the immune system with balanced nutrition. Warm meals help maintain body temperature while also soothing the respiratory tract.

Soups made from chicken, vegetables, or bone broth are especially helpful because they are rich in minerals and easy to digest. Ingredients such as garlic, ginger, and onions are widely used in home kitchens and are known for their immune-supporting properties. Ginger tea with lemon and a small amount of honey is also commonly used to soothe the throat and reduce irritation during early cold symptoms.

Fresh fruits such as oranges, lemons, mangoes, and pawpaw provide vitamin C, which plays an important role in supporting immune function. Including these foods regularly during the cold season helps the body stay more resilient.

    Staying warm and properly layered

Exposure to cold air, especially in the early morning and evening hours, can weaken the body’s ability to fight infections. Dressing in layers helps regulate body temperature effectively. Wearing warm clothing such as sweaters, scarves, and socks is especially important for children and the elderly, who are more sensitive to temperature changes.

Keeping the home warm and dry also plays a role in preventing illness. Closing windows during cold winds, using extra blankets at night, and ensuring sleeping areas are not damp can reduce the risk of catching a cold.

    Maintaining proper hydration

Many people reduce their water intake during cold weather, but hydration remains essential. Water helps keep the mucous membranes in the respiratory system moist, which improves the body’s ability to trap and eliminate viruses.

Warm fluids are especially beneficial during this season. Herbal teas, warm water with lemon, and light broths can be taken throughout the day to maintain hydration while also providing comfort in cold conditions. Avoiding excessive caffeine is also advisable, as it may contribute to dehydration.

    Practicing good hygiene at home

Respiratory infections spread easily through contact, especially in households where people share common spaces. Regular handwashing with soap and clean water remains one of the most effective preventive measures. Hands should be washed before eating, after using the restroom, and after returning home from public places.

Frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, mobile phones, and table tops should also be cleaned regularly. Encouraging proper hygiene habits among children is particularly important, as they are more likely to come into close contact while playing or attending school.

Using steam and natural inhalation for relief

Steam inhalation is a traditional home remedy that helps relieve nasal congestion and soothe irritated airways. Inhaling warm steam from a bowl of hot water can help loosen mucus and make breathing easier. Adding natural ingredients like eucalyptus leaves or peppermint can enhance the soothing effect.

This practice is especially useful at the early stages of a cold, although it should be done carefully to avoid burns.

Ensuring adequate rest and stress management

Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining a strong immune system. During the cold season, the body requires sufficient rest to recover and defend itself against infections. Adults should aim for consistent sleep patterns, while children need even more rest to support growth and immunity.

Stress can also weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections. Simple relaxation practices such as light stretching, reading, or listening to calming music can help maintain overall well-being during the cold season.
