    Early Life

François-Henri Pinault was born on May 28, 1962, in Rennes, France. He is the son of billionaire entrepreneur François Pinault, who founded a timber company that later evolved into Pinault S.A., eventually becoming PPR and later Kering.

Pinault attended the prestigious HEC School of Management, graduating in 1985. While still a student, he founded a customer relationship management company called Soft Computing and gained technical experience through internships at Hewlett-Packard in Paris, where he worked as a software developer. After graduating, he completed his compulsory military service at the French Consulate in Los Angeles, where he also studied developments in fashion and technology in the U.S.

    Rise at PPR and Kering

François-Henri officially joined the family business in the late 1980s, beginning in the buying department at PPR. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming head of Pinault Distribution by 1990. Throughout the 1990s, he served as CEO of major subsidiaries including CFAO and Fnac, gaining experience across retail and international markets.

In 2003, his father appointed him president of Groupe Artemis, the Pinault family holding company. Two years later, François-Henri was named CEO and Chairman of PPR, marking a major turning point in the company’s direction.

    Building a Global Luxury Empire

Under Pinault’s leadership, PPR was transformed into a pure luxury group and rebranded as Kering. He oversaw the sale of non-luxury businesses, including Puma and Volcom, and doubled down on high-end fashion, jewelry, and watches.

Kering went on to acquire or strengthen ownership in brands such as:

    • Gucci
    • Yves Saint Laurent
    • Balenciaga
    • Boucheron
    • Bottega Veneta
    • Alexander McQueen
    • Brioni
    • Pomellato
    • Ulysse Nardin

Pinault became known for bold creative decisions, including appointing Alessandro Michele at Gucci and Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga—moves that dramatically boosted brand relevance and sales. Under his leadership, Kering’s revenues surged, with the group reporting €15.5 billion in revenue in 2018, a year-over-year increase of 27%.

    Expansion into Eyewear and Sustainability

In 2014, Pinault launched Kering Eyewear, expanding the company’s control over product design and distribution. The division later partnered with Richemont to produce eyewear for brands such as Cartier and Montblanc, and acquired full ownership of Danish luxury eyewear brand Lindberg in 2021.

Pinault has also positioned Kering as a leader in sustainability and corporate responsibility, launching initiatives focused on environmental impact and women’s empowerment across the fashion industry.
