The handbrake, also known as the parking brake or emergency brake, is a crucial part of a vehicle’s braking system. It helps keep the car stationary when parked and can serve as a backup in case of brake failure. Over time, the handbrake cable may loosen, causing it to lose effectiveness. Adjusting the handbrake ensures it holds the car properly without requiring excessive force to engage. Here is how to adjust handbrake.

    When to Adjust the Handbrake

You may need to adjust your handbrake if:

    • It pulls up too high before engaging
    • It doesn’t hold the car securely on a slope
    • It feels too loose or too tight when applied

Most vehicles have a way to manually adjust the handbrake either through the center console or under the vehicle near the brake assembly.

    Tools You Might Need

    • A wrench or socket set
    • Screwdriver (if removing panels)
    • Jack and axle stands (if adjusting underneath the car)
    • Gloves for safety

Adjusting the Handbrake from Inside the Car

    1. Access the Handbrake Mechanism
      • In many vehicles, you can reach the adjuster by removing the center console cover or the rubber boot around the handbrake lever.
    2. Locate the Adjusting Nut
      • Once exposed, look for a threaded rod and nut connected to the handbrake cable.
    3. Tighten the Cable
      • Use a spanner or socket to turn the nut clockwise to tighten the cable.
      • Pull the handbrake after each adjustment to check tension. It should engage firmly after about 4–7 clicks.
    4. Reassemble and Test
      • Replace the cover or boot and ensure everything is secure.
      • Test the handbrake on a slight incline to confirm it holds the car in place.

    Adjusting from Underneath the Car

Some models require adjustment at the rear brake assembly or under the car:

    1. Raise the Vehicle Safely
      • Use a jack to lift the car and secure it with axle stands.
    2. Locate the Adjustment Point
      • Follow the cable to where it connects to the rear wheels. You’ll typically find an adjuster nut or screw.
    3. Make the Adjustment
      • Turn the nut or screw slowly while testing the handbrake’s tension.
    4. Lower the Vehicle and Test
      • After adjustment, ensure the handbrake engages quickly and holds the vehicle.
