When working on a Microsoft Word document, you may need to include a wide table, chart, or image that fits better in landscape orientation instead of the usual portrait layout. Fortunately, Word allows you to change the orientation of a single page without affecting the rest of your document. Knowing how to change one page to landscape in Word helps improve the layout and readability of your work.
- Open Your Document in Microsoft Word
Start by opening the Word document where you want to change a single page’s orientation. Scroll to the page that you want to switch to landscape. If the content you want to rotate is not yet on a separate page, you’ll need to insert section breaks before and after it.
- Insert a Section Break
To make sure the landscape orientation affects only one page, you need to separate that page from the rest of the document using section breaks.
Follow these steps:
- Place your cursor at the beginning of the content you want to put in landscape.
- Go to the Layout tab on the top menu.
- Click on Breaks under the Page Setup group.
- Under Section Breaks, select Next Page.
This creates a new section starting from that page.
Next, scroll to the end of the content that should be in landscape and repeat the same steps to insert another Next Page section break. This ensures the orientation change only applies between the two section breaks.
- Change the Page Orientation to Landscape
Now that the page is in its own section, you can change its orientation:
- Click anywhere on the page you want to change.
- Go to the Layout tab.
- Select Orientation and choose Landscape.
Only the section between the two breaks will now appear in landscape mode, while the rest of your document remains in portrait orientation.
- Check the Page Layout
Scroll through your document to make sure only one page has changed orientation. The pages before and after should still be in portrait. If more than one page changed, check your section breaks to ensure they are placed correctly.
- Add Content to the Landscape Page
Now that the page is set to landscape, you can insert wide tables, images, charts, or diagrams that need extra horizontal space. The landscape orientation provides a better fit for such elements and prevents awkward page formatting.
- Save Your Document
Once you’re satisfied with the layout, click File > Save to preserve your changes. If you plan to print the document, use Print Preview to confirm that the orientation displays correctly on the intended page.
- Tips for Better Formatting
- Always use section breaks, not page breaks, when changing orientation on one page.
- If your document includes headers or footers, you may need to adjust their alignment separately for the landscape page.
- Avoid having too much text on the landscape page—use it mainly for visuals or wide content.
