Many South Africans overpay their taxes during the financial year without realizing they may be entitled to a refund. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) allows taxpayers to claim back money when they have paid more tax than they owe. Understanding how to claim your tax refund ensures you receive the money you deserve and avoid unnecessary delays.
- Understand What a Tax Refund Is
A tax refund occurs when SARS determines that the total tax you paid during the year exceeds your actual tax liability. This usually happens if you have additional deductions, medical credits, retirement contributions, or other allowable expenses that reduce your taxable income. SARS automatically assesses your tax return to determine if you qualify for a refund.
- Submit Your Tax Return
To be eligible for a tax refund, you must first submit your annual income tax return to SARS. You can do this through SARS eFiling on their website (www.sars.gov.za) or via the SARS MobiApp. Make sure to submit your return within the official filing season, which usually runs from July to October each year for individual taxpayers.
When completing your return, include all relevant income sources, deductions, and supporting documents such as IRP5 forms, medical aid certificates, and retirement contribution statements. Incomplete or incorrect information may delay your refund.
- Check Your Assessment
After submitting your return, SARS will issue a Notice of Assessment (ITA34). This document shows whether you owe tax or are due a refund. You can find it under the “Correspondence” section of your SARS eFiling profile or the MobiApp. Review the assessment carefully to ensure that all figures are accurate.
If the assessment indicates a refund, it will state the amount and expected payment timeframe. If you disagree with SARS’s calculations, you can file an objection or request a correction.
- Provide or Update Banking Details
SARS will only process your refund if your banking details are correct and verified. Log in to your SARS eFiling account and check your registered bank information under “User Profile.” If the details are outdated, update them with your current bank account information and provide proof such as a stamped bank confirmation letter.
SARS does not issue refunds to third-party accounts, so ensure that the bank account belongs to you, the registered taxpayer.
- Wait for Refund Processing
Once your return has been verified and assessed, SARS will process your refund within two to three business days, provided there are no issues or audits. If your return is flagged for review, you may be asked to submit additional supporting documents. In that case, the refund will only be released after verification is completed.
- Track the Status of Your Refund
You can track the progress of your refund by logging into SARS eFiling or using the MobiApp. Under the “History” or “Returns” section, check your refund status. You can also contact SARS directly by calling 0800 00 7277 to inquire about your payment.
- Avoid Common Mistakes
To prevent refund delays, always ensure that your details are correct, all supporting documents are uploaded, and there are no outstanding returns from previous years. Filing late or entering wrong information may cause SARS to withhold your refund until issues are resolved.
