Detangling natural hair can be a gentle and manageable process when done with patience and the right technique. Natural hair textures are prone to knots and tangles, especially after washing or wearing certain styles. Proper detangling helps prevent breakage, retain length, and keep your hair healthy and manageable. Here is how to detangle natural hair.

    1. Start with Damp or Wet Hair

Never try to detangle dry natural hair—it’s more fragile and likely to snap. Lightly mist your hair with water or detangle in the shower with conditioner. Water helps loosen tangles, while moisture makes the hair more flexible and less likely to break.

    1. Apply a Detangler or Conditioner

Use a generous amount of a slippery conditioner or a leave-in detangling product. These products help soften the hair, reduce friction, and make it easier to work through knots. For tight coils or thick textures, extra slip is especially important.

    1. Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into four to eight sections using clips or hair ties. Working in smaller sections gives you more control and reduces the risk of pulling or tearing your hair. It also allows you to focus on each part evenly.

    1. Use Your Fingers First

Gently finger-detangle each section by removing large tangles before using a tool. This helps you feel the knots and work through them without excessive force. Be patient and take your time, especially with matted areas.

    1. Follow with a Wide-Tooth Comb or Detangling Brush

After finger-detangling, use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush like a Tangle Teezer or Denman brush. Start from the ends of your hair and slowly work your way up to the roots. Avoid dragging the comb through your hair from root to tip in one go—this can cause breakage.

    1. Detangle Each Section Thoroughly

Once a section is fully detangled, twist or braid it to keep it separated and tangle-free while you work on the rest of your hair. This step also helps define curls if you plan to style afterwards.

    1. Rinse or Leave In

If you used conditioner, rinse it out in the shower after detangling, unless it’s a leave-in product. If you detangled outside of the shower, you can follow up with your usual styling routine.

    1. Be Gentle and Consistent

Detangling is best done regularly—how often depends on your hair routine and texture. Some people detangle during every wash, while others prefer once a week. Always be gentle to avoid unnecessary shedding or damage.
