Box braids are a classic and protective hairstyle known for their neat, square-shaped sections and versatile styling options. Whether you’re doing them on your own hair or someone else’s, the process takes time and patience but can result in a stunning, long-lasting look. Box braids help protect natural hair, reduce the need for daily styling, and offer a wide range of creative expression. Here is how to do box braids.
- Prepare Your Hair
Start by washing your hair thoroughly with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Once clean, towel-dry and apply a leave-in conditioner or a lightweight oil to keep your hair hydrated. Detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb to remove knots. Blow-dry if necessary, especially if your hair is thick or tightly curled, to make sectioning easier.
- Gather Your Tools and Hair Extensions
You’ll need the following items:
- A rat-tail comb for parting
- Hair clips or bands to hold sections
- Braiding hair (synthetic extensions like kanekalon or expressions)
- Scissors
- Styling gel or edge control
- Hot water and a towel (for sealing the ends)
Choose the color and length of braiding hair based on your desired look. Stretch the hair if needed, to give it a more natural taper at the ends.
- Section the Hair
Part your hair into four large sections to keep it organized. Start with one section and use the rat-tail comb to divide it into small, square-shaped boxes. Secure each section with a clip or rubber band to keep the parts clean and tidy. The size of each box will determine the thickness of each braid.
- Begin Braiding
Take one box section, apply a small amount of gel or edge control to the roots, and split it into three parts. Take a piece of braiding hair and blend it with your natural hair. Begin braiding close to the scalp, making sure the braid is tight enough to hold but not so tight that it causes discomfort. Continue braiding down to the ends.
Repeat this process for all the remaining sections. Be consistent with the size and tension of each braid for a neat overall appearance.
- Seal the Ends
Once all the braids are done, dip the ends into hot water to seal them. This helps to secure the braids and prevents them from unraveling. Carefully pat them dry with a towel. You can also trim any stray strands for a cleaner look.
- Finish and Maintain
Apply mousse over your braids to reduce frizz and set the style. Wrap a silk scarf around your head or wear a satin bonnet at night to protect the braids while you sleep. Moisturize your scalp regularly with light oils to prevent dryness.
