Drawing a dinosaur is an exciting activity for children because it lets them explore shapes, creativity, and imagination all at once. Dinosaurs come in many forms, but the easiest way to teach kids is by using simple shapes such as circles, ovals, and curves. This approach helps them build confidence while still creating a fun and recognisable character. By breaking the drawing into small steps—starting with the body, adding the head, then the legs, tail, and details—kids can enjoy the process without feeling overwhelmed. The final result is a friendly dinosaur that feels easy and enjoyable to create.
- Starting With the Body Shape
Begin by drawing a large oval for the dinosaur’s body. Make it slightly tilted so that it looks like the dinosaur is standing upright. This oval is the main part of the dinosaur and helps guide where all other features will go.
- Adding the Head
Above the body, draw a smaller circle or oval for the head. Connect it gently to the body using two short curved lines for the neck. Keep the head shape simple and round so it looks cute and kid-friendly.
- Drawing the Legs
Under the body, draw two thick legs using long rounded rectangles. Keep the legs slightly wide to give the dinosaur a strong, sturdy appearance. At the bottom of each leg, add three small toes shaped like tiny triangles or bumps.
- Adding the Arms
On each side of the upper body, draw two small arms using short curved lines. Make the arms small and simple so the dinosaur keeps a friendly and cartoon-like look. Add two tiny fingers on each arm.
- Drawing the Tail
At the back of the body, draw a long curved tail. The tail can be thick at the base and thin at the end. Kids can make it straight, curved, or even slightly spiky depending on the style they want.
- Adding the Face Details
Inside the head, draw two big round eyes with small dots for pupils. Add a curved smile and a tiny oval nose. These features are important for giving the dinosaur a friendly expression.
- Drawing the Back Spikes
Along the top of the dinosaur’s back and tail, add small triangle shapes. These spikes can be big or small, and kids can choose how many they want. This step makes the dinosaur instantly recognisable.
- Finishing and Colouring
Outline your drawing with darker lines and erase extra guidelines. Let children colour their dinosaur in green, blue, yellow, or any creative combination they love. Adding spots or stripes can make the dinosaur even more fun.
