If you enjoy fun DIY crafts or simple science activities, learning how to make slime with toothpaste can be an exciting project to try at home. Slime is a soft, stretchy substance that many people enjoy playing with because of its unique texture. Making slime yourself allows you to experiment with everyday household ingredients while creating something entertaining for children and adults alike.

Slime-making projects have become popular around the world through online craft communities and videos, including among hobbyists in Kenya. One easy method uses toothpaste as the base ingredient, making it accessible for beginners who want to experiment with homemade slime.

      Materials

Before you begin, prepare all the ingredients and tools you will need.

    You will need:

    • Thick toothpaste, preferably gel or whitening toothpaste
    • Cornstarch or flour
    • A small mixing bowl
    • A spoon or spatula
    • Food coloring, optional
    • A few drops of water

Using thicker toothpaste usually produces better slime texture.

    1. Add the Toothpaste to the Bowl

Squeeze a generous amount of toothpaste into your mixing bowl.

The more toothpaste you use, the larger your slime batch will be. Start with about three to four tablespoons if you are making a small portion.

Spread it evenly in the bowl to make mixing easier.

    1. Mix in Cornstarch or Flour

Gradually add cornstarch or flour to the toothpaste.

Add one teaspoon at a time while stirring continuously. The mixture will begin to thicken as the powder combines with the toothpaste.

The mixture should slowly transform from a paste into a stretchy dough-like texture.

    1. Add Color if Desired

If you want colorful slime, mix in a drop or two of food coloring.

Stir thoroughly so the color spreads evenly throughout the mixture. You can experiment with different colors to create fun variations.

    1. Adjust the Texture

The key to good slime is the right balance of moisture and thickness.

If the mixture is too sticky:

    • Add a small amount of cornstarch or flour

If the mixture feels too dry:

    • Add a few drops of water

Mix until the slime becomes smooth and stretchy.

    1. Knead the Slime

Once the mixture thickens, use your hands to knead it.

Kneading helps combine the ingredients more evenly and improves the slime’s elasticity. Continue kneading until the slime feels soft and flexible.

This step also helps remove lumps from the mixture.

    1. Test the Stretchiness

Stretch the slime gently between your hands.

    A well-made slime should:

    • Stretch without breaking easily
    • Feel soft and flexible
    • Not stick excessively to your fingers

If needed, adjust the ingredients slightly until you achieve the desired consistency.

    1. Store the Slime Properly

When you are finished playing with the slime, place it in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag.

Proper storage helps keep the slime soft and prevents it from drying out.

Most homemade slime can last several days if stored properly.
