Making bread at home is a rewarding process that fills your kitchen with a warm, comforting aroma and results in a fresh, delicious loaf. While there are different types of bread, a basic white or whole wheat bread follows a simple process involving mixing, kneading, proofing, and baking. Here is how to make bread step by step.
Ingredients
To make a basic loaf of bread, you will need:
- 4 cups all-purpose or bread flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F or 45°C)
- 1 tablespoon sugar or honey
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
Steps to Make Bread
- Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use. - Mix the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and oil or melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough starts to come together. - Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes. Push the dough away with the heels of your hands, fold it over, and rotate it. The dough should become smooth and elastic. If it is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed. - First Rise (Proofing)
