Dunked wings are crispy, juicy chicken wings coated in a rich, flavorful sauce, making them a perfect treat for any occasion. These wings are deep-fried or baked until golden and then covered in a sweet, sticky, and slightly spicy sauce. Whether you’re preparing them for a snack, party, or family meal, this recipe will help you achieve restaurant-style dunked wings at home. Here is how to make dunked wings.
Ingredients
For the Wings:
- 1 kg chicken wings
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon baking powder (for extra crispiness)
- ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
- 1 egg
- Cooking oil (for frying)
For the Dunked Sauce:
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (to thicken)
Instructions
Preparing the Wings
- Season the Chicken
In a bowl, mix the wings with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Let them sit for at least 15 minutes to absorb the seasoning. - Prepare the Coating
In one bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk together. In another bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, and a little extra salt and pepper. - Coat the Wings
Dip each wing into the egg mixture, then dredge it in the flour mixture, making sure it is well coated. Shake off any excess flour. For extra crunch, repeat the process for a double coating. - Fry the Wings
Heat cooking oil in a deep pan to 180°C (350°F). Fry the wings in batches for about 8-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Drain them on a wire rack or paper towel.
Alternative: If you prefer baking, place the coated wings on a greased baking tray and bake at 200°C (400°F) for 35-40 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Making the Dunked Sauce
- Combine the Ingredients
In a small saucepan over medium heat, mix honey, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Stir until the mixture is smooth. - Thicken the Sauce
Add the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and stir continuously until the sauce thickens. This should take about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Coating the Wings
- Dunk and Serve
Place the cooked wings in a bowl and pour the warm sauce over them. Toss well until they are fully coated. Serve immediately with your favorite dips or sides.
