A blocked sink drain can be very inconvenient, whether it happens in the kitchen or bathroom. Food particles, grease, soap scum, or hair are common causes of clogs. Luckily, you can clear a blocked sink without always needing a plumber. With the right methods, you can get water flowing smoothly again. Here is how to unblock a sink drain.

    1. Use Boiling Water

The simplest method is to pour boiling water slowly into the drain. This can help dissolve grease, soap, or small clogs. Repeat the process two or three times if needed.

    1. Try a Plunger

Place a plunger over the drain and push up and down several times to create suction. This can loosen clogs and allow water to pass through. Make sure there is some water in the sink to improve suction.

    1. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain followed by half a cup of vinegar. Cover the drain and let the mixture fizz for about 15 minutes, then flush with hot water. This natural solution works well on minor blockages.

    1. Remove and Clean the Trap

If the clog persists, place a bucket under the sink and unscrew the U-shaped pipe (trap). Empty its contents and clean it thoroughly before reattaching. This often clears stubborn blockages.

    1. Use a Drain Snake

For deep clogs, a drain snake or wire can be inserted into the pipe to pull out or break down the blockage. Rotate it gently to avoid damaging the pipes.

    1. Prevent Future Blockages

To keep your sink draining properly, avoid pouring grease, oil, or coffee grounds down the drain. Use sink strainers to catch food particles and hair before they enter the pipes.
