A funeral program is a thoughtful guide that outlines the order of events during a funeral or memorial service. It serves as a tribute to the deceased, providing key information about their life and the ceremony details. Writing a funeral program requires sensitivity, clarity, and organization to ensure it honors the departed while guiding attendees through the proceedings. Here is how to write a funeral program.

    1. Gather Essential Information
Collect details about the deceased, including their full name, date of birth, date of passing, and any significant accomplishments or roles they held during their life. Consult with family members to ensure accuracy and include any special preferences they might have for the program.
    2. Choose a Layout and Design
Decide on the format of the program. Most funeral programs are folded booklets, but you can also create a single-page handout or an online version. Select a simple yet respectful design that incorporates subtle colors, floral patterns, or religious symbols, depending on the deceased’s preferences or cultural traditions.
    3. Write the Cover Page
The cover should include the full name of the deceased, their birth and death dates, and a title such as In Loving Memory or A Celebration of Life. Adding a photograph of the deceased and a meaningful quote, scripture, or poem can personalize the cover.
    4. Outline the Order of Service
List the sequence of events for the funeral or memorial service. Include details such as opening prayers, hymns, eulogies, scripture readings, musical tributes, and the closing remarks. Specify the names of individuals participating in these segments to acknowledge their contributions.
    5. Include a Life Tribute or Obituary
Dedicate a section to a brief life story or obituary that highlights key moments, accomplishments, and values of the deceased. This can also include anecdotes, hobbies, and the legacy they leave behind. Keep it concise and heartfelt.
    6. List Special Thanks or Acknowledgments
Add a section to thank attendees, clergy, musicians, or anyone who contributed to the service. If the family wishes, this section can also invite attendees to a reception or gathering after the ceremony.
    7. Incorporate Readings, Prayers, or Poems
Include any readings, prayers, or poems that will be part of the service. Ensure the chosen texts align with the deceased’s beliefs or the tone of the ceremony. These elements provide comfort and meaning to attendees.
    8. Provide Practical Information
Mention the location and time of the funeral service, burial site (if applicable), and any post-service gatherings. Include contact information for further inquiries or RSVPs if required.
    9. Proofread and Finalize
Carefully review the program for spelling and factual accuracy. Share it with close family members for approval before printing or distributing.

A man was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a violent confrontation between police officers and armed suspects in Modika area along the Modika–Dadaab road in Garissa County. According to police the incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. when officers on patrol intercepted a Toyota Probox suspected to be ferrying uncustomised goods. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and was being interrogated when the situation escalated. Garissa police commander John Nzioka said the incident is under probe. He said they had invited the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to investigate the matter. “We will give IPOA all the support they need to investigate this matter,” he said. This followed a protest in the area by locals who demanded justice for the shooting. The locals said the victim was innocent and demanded action to ensure accountability. Police said after a driver was stopped, a second Toyota Probox carrying about nine occupants approached the scene. The group, reportedly armed with a rifle and machetes, attacked the officers, prompting them to fire warning shots in the air as they withdrew from the scene. A follow-up visit by senior officers and crime scene investigators confirmed that one man, identified as Adan Mohamed Hassan, aged approximately 32, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene. The body was moved to Garissa County Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The news spread prompting the protests. Meanwhile, police in Marsabit County launched investigations into the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man during a robbery incident at Merille market in Laisamis Sub-county. According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:00 a.m. on April 21, 2026. The deceased, identified as Elius Iribae, had travelled from Nairobi in the company of another individual to purchase goats at the market. Police said the pair had just alighted from a lorry at Merille market when a gunman armed with a rifle shot Iribae in the back. He collapsed and died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. The attacker reportedly stole an unspecified amount of money during the incident. However, officers later recovered Sh298,300 in cash believed to be linked to the robbery, as well as a Tecno smartphone. The body of the deceased was moved to Laisamis Sub-County Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The scene was visited by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Marsabit South, officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) based in Merille, and personnel from Merille Police Post. Authorities are pursuing the armed suspect as investigations into the killing continue.
