School clubs are among the best ways for young people to build confidence and try exciting new activities. Not only do school clubs provide a safe environment for learning, but they also often provide access to facilities and activities that are not part of the day-to-day school curriculum. However, keeping these clubs safe is just as important as making sure the children have a great time, right? That’s why it pays to focus on securing the premises, starting with window safety catches.

After-school environments offer many opportunities but can also pose risks. For example, keeping the place well-ventilated often means opening the windows. By doing so, you create a two-fold risk: the building becoming too cold to be hospitable and potential fall risks from open windows. To help anyone in charge of after-school clubs understand the importance of window safety catches, we contacted Locks & Hardware, experts in window ironmongery. What did we learn from a leading authority on window security?

Why After-School Settings Need To Focus On Window Safety

When in charge of an after-school club, it’s easy to let your focus be purely on the children. Avoiding injury and harm often results from moderating play and activities, right?

    • However, other issues can pose a risk to the safety and security of the children, including windows.
    • Kids are generally adventurous, so they are more likely to take risks that adults would not. That includes, for example, popping their head—or bodies—out of a fully open window.
    • That’s why having window safety catches is so important; you can keep windows open for ventilation, but limit how far they open.
    • After-school clubs are generally more informal than school itself. That means kids get a bit more freedom to whizz around and enjoy the natural energy of childhood.
    • That means that children may be more likely to gather around a window to watch a game being played outside, for example.
    • They could, though, be at risk of falling out – or through – the window if it is opened in full.

Then, there is the health risk. Open windows create ventilation, yes, but that constant supply of fresh air brings in the cold. Buildings can cool down quickly, negating the benefits of having the heating on. Kids might find after-school clubs to be too cold if the windows are opened in full.

By using window safety catches, you can open windows enough to create airflow without the risks of children falling or the building becoming too cold due to heat loss.

The Benefits Of Simple Safety Catches On All School Windows

First off, it should be noted that safety requirements require window safety catches on all windows 1.4m or more above ground level. Even at ground level, though, having window restrictors in place is highly recommended. Let’s look at the benefits of window opening restrictors in your school:

    Child Safety

First and foremost, children are more likely to stay safe because the windows cease to be a falling risk. Children are far less likely to fall out of a window if it is secured with a window restrictor. This prevents the window from opening far enough for a child to fit through the gap. Instead, they stay safe and can be left to their own devices at/near windows without the same potential concern.

Child safety is not something to ignore. Yes, after-school clubs should let children run free, but there still needs to be security in place. Avoiding fall risks – especially from upper-storey windows – should not be ignored. The injuries can be catastrophic – even fatal – to children, so protecting windows from opening too wide is a worthwhile priority.

    Easy Emergency Operations

On ground-floor windows, having window safety catches can sometimes feel counterintuitive. What if there is a fire? How can you get out of the window in that case? Luckily, most school-approved window restrictors come with a safety access. These quick-release buttons or key-operated controls mean that, in an emergency, the window restrictor can be disabled, allowing escape via the window. If you worry that window safety locks could complicate emergency exits, do not worry.

    Improved Security

There is also the benefit of knowing that these window restrictors prevent outside entry. The window now cannot open far enough for someone to climb in. As such, vandals and intruders are far less likely to be able to enter your after-school club premises without being noticed. That reduces the risk of vandalism, physical harm, abduction, and theft.

    Improved Airflow & Ventilation

Just as important as keeping children safe is keeping them healthy. Sitting around in a stuffy, humid and overly warm environment is an easy way to leave children feeling unwell. With window safety catches, you can get windows open enough to allow in plenty of air. As such, ventilation is improved, and children are no longer breathing in regurgitated, hot, humid air.

    Reduced Risk Of Infection

As any school worker knows, it only takes one child with the sniffles to infect the entire classroom. By having window opening restrictors in place, you can have windows open enough to keep a constant supply of fresh, clean air coming in. Viral particles then do not have the same potential to build up in the atmosphere, reducing the risk of germs and viruses spreading from child to child.

    Easier Heat Maintenance

Keeping your after-school club warm is very important, especially in the winter. If the windows are open too much, though, all that heated air from the heating system escapes. Thus, the room(s) become colder and children feel the difference far more than adults do. With window safety catches, you keep airflow well-managed without the same heat loss from air replacement.

    Natural Lighting

With window safety catches, you also have the chance to keep the windows open for longer. That means more natural daylight coming in, without having to contend with risks about children falling out of the windows. More daylight is a small but often forgotten part of creating a healthy after-school club environment.

Window Safety Locks: Low-Cost Safety For After-School Clubs

By installing something as simple as some window safety catches, you create a much safer after-school environment. Children can enjoy the full pace of play and life intended without staff having to worry about air quality, warmth, ventilation, and, of course, the potential for accidents when children are playing close to the windows.

Given the cost involved relative to other security and ventilation schools, window safety catches are a no-brainer!
