The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has raised concern over a series of attacks and killings targeting members of the National Police Service (NPS) in different parts of the country.
IPOA said the deaths of police officers in the line of duty were devastating and could undermine public safety and confidence in policing.
“This is not good,” IPOA said in a statement on Wednesday.
The authority said the loss of police officers while maintaining public order and safety was a matter of concern, noting that stronger relations between police and citizens were necessary to improve public safety.
“We strive to promote public understanding and good relationship by building confidence between the police and citizens. We seek to continue working together because it is in the interest of citizens, IPOA, and police officers that public safety is achieved,” the authority said.
IPOA sent condolences to the families and friends of officers who lost their lives while serving in September.
They included Chief Inspector Adan Isaak Somo and Constable Bethwel Kibet, both attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), who were ambushed and killed by armed attackers at Gotu in Isiolo County.
Another ASTU officer was shot and injured during an attack in Burat Ward, Isiolo County, in an ambush by suspected livestock raiders.
IPOA also mourned Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika, who was found dead in Kagira, Kabete, Kiambu County.
The authority said Kenyans want an empowered police service that is safe and able to engage communities confidently, effectively, professionally and efficiently.
IPOA called on the National Police Service to ensure policing is supported by fit-for-purpose strategies and insights based on evidence and good practice.
“As an independent and impartial Authority, IPOA reiterates its commitment to building trust and promoting professionalism, accountability, discipline, transparency, and respect for human rights within the National Police Service,” IPOA said.
