The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced it launched investigations into the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old student in Huruma, Nairobi County, following an incident involving police officers on Saturday evening.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, IPOA vice chairperson Ann Wanjiku Mwangi confirmed that it had deployed a Rapid Response Team from its Nairobi Regional Office to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of Sheryl Adhiambo. The shooting occurred on the evening of February 7, 2026, allegedly during a police pursuit of robbery suspects in the Huruma area.

IPOA investigators are currently on the ground gathering evidence, recording witness statements, and analysing samples and exhibits linked to the incident.

The authority said the investigations are aimed at establishing the exact circumstances under which the shooting occurred and determining whether any wrongdoing took place.

“The outcome of the investigations will inform appropriate recommendations to relevant agencies,” IPOA said.

The oversight body extended its condolences to the family of Ms. Adhiambo and urged members of the public to remain calm as inquiries continue.

IPOA further assured the bereaved family and the public that it remains committed to conducting independent, impartial, and thorough investigations to establish culpability and ensure accountability where necessary.

The incident has renewed public scrutiny over police conduct during operations, particularly in densely populated residential areas.
