Jamii Telecom is said to be at advanced stages of launching a promotion similar to the just launched Safaricom 100 Mbps Business Wise promotion. The Safaricom and Jamii Telecomms offer comes after the government through the ministry of information and communications intervened and requested that the two companies provide cheap fibre link to SOHO businesses.
Safaricom will provide the last mile connection through their Wimax link. At the Huawei IDEOS’ briefing yesterday, the PS, Dr Ndemo, intimated that talks were conclusive between the government and the two telcos and such offer was to be expected. The offer was to go for less than $100 though Safaricom is selling it at Ksh 15,000 ($175) per month. The offer is still revolutionary.
Through the newspaper advert today, Safaricom is offering;
- Free Customer Premises Equipment for all Wimax Connection (Worth Ksh 45,000)
- Free Installation (worth Ksh 30,000)
- Free Usage for one month (Worth Ksh 15,000)
- Free Domain Hosting for one year
It is such an enticing deal and Safaricom with its market muscle might just change the tech internet landscape in Kenya with this offer. Jamii is already rolling out the connection in Lavington and Hurlingham area and Safaricom’s offer is available already through the Wimax link.
The limitations are that you can only achieve upto 3Mbps with WiMax and so if you want any speed above that, you will need to deploy fibre to the location. This is still expensive though a move to be lauded

AT $175 this is still very expensive! When we buy airtime its not in $ they should kindly put the price in Kshs. and not base the subscription in $. If so, we should all be converting to $ before using M-pesa service. Hey, safaricom, we r in Kenya NOT USA!
