    Early Life

Jane Seymour Fonda was born on December 21, 1937, in New York City into one of America’s most famous acting families. Her father, Henry Fonda, starred in classic films including 12 Angry Men and The Grapes of Wrath.

Her younger brother, Peter Fonda, also became a Hollywood star, while her niece is actress Bridget Fonda.

Fonda endured personal tragedy at a young age after her mother, Frances Ford Seymour, died when Jane was just 12 years old. The experience deeply affected her and shaped much of her later activism and personal growth.

She attended prestigious schools including Greenwich Academy and Emma Willard School before studying at Vassar College. Although she initially explored art and modeling, Fonda eventually discovered acting after training under legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.

    Modeling

Before becoming a major actress, Fonda worked as a successful fashion model and appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine multiple times.

Her acting breakthrough came in the 1960 romantic comedy Tall Story. Throughout the decade, she appeared in films including Cat Ballou, The Chase, and the cult sci-fi classic Barbarella.

“Barbarella” transformed Fonda into an international sex symbol and pop culture icon, while “Cat Ballou” helped establish her as a serious Hollywood star.

    Oscar Success

Fonda reached the peak of her acting career during the 1970s, earning critical acclaim for dramatic performances that showcased her range and intensity.

She won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for Klute and later won a second Oscar for Coming Home.

Other notable films from this era included Julia, Fun with Dick and Jane, and The China Syndrome.

In 1980, Fonda starred alongside Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton in the workplace comedy 9 to 5, one of the year’s biggest box office hits.

A year later, she fulfilled a longtime dream by starring opposite her father in On Golden Pond. The film earned Henry Fonda his first Academy Award and remains one of the most celebrated father-daughter collaborations in Hollywood history.

    Fitness Empire

Beyond acting, Jane Fonda built one of the most successful celebrity fitness brands ever created.

After suffering a foot injury while filming “The China Syndrome,” she turned to aerobics as an alternative to ballet exercise. This eventually led to the launch of the groundbreaking “Jane Fonda Workout” program.

Her 1981 release, Jane Fonda’s Workout Book, became a bestseller, while her workout VHS tapes exploded in popularity during the home video boom of the 1980s.

The original Jane Fonda’s Workout became one of the best-selling VHS tapes in history and helped launch a global fitness craze.

By the mid-1990s, Fonda had released dozens of workout videos, books, and audio fitness programs, turning herself into a multimillion-dollar fitness mogul.

    Return to Acting

After retiring from acting in the early 1990s, Fonda returned to Hollywood in 2005 with Monster-in-Law opposite Jennifer Lopez.

She later appeared in projects including Georgia Rule, The Butler, and Book Club: The Next Chapter.

A new generation of fans discovered Fonda through the Netflix comedy series Grace and Frankie, where she starred alongside Lily Tomlin from 2015 to 2022.

The show became one of Netflix’s longest-running original comedy series.

    Ted Turner Divorce Settlement

Fonda’s marriage to Ted Turner became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about celebrity unions.

The couple married in 1991 and divorced in 2001. Reports indicated that Fonda received a divorce settlement worth more than $100 million, including cash, stock holdings, and valuable real estate.

At the time, Turner was among the wealthiest media executives in the world thanks to his ownership of CNN and Turner Broadcasting.

The settlement significantly boosted Fonda’s overall net worth and added major property assets to her portfolio.

    Political Activism

Throughout her career, Fonda became almost as famous for her activism as for her acting.

During the Vietnam War era, she openly opposed U.S. involvement in the conflict and traveled to North Vietnam in 1972, where controversial photographs of her seated near an anti-aircraft gun led critics to label her “Hanoi Jane.”

Although Fonda later expressed regret for some aspects of the trip, the controversy followed her for decades.

In later years, she focused heavily on feminist causes, civil rights, climate activism, and environmental campaigns. In 2022, she launched the Jane Fonda Climate PAC to support climate-focused political candidates.

    Personal Life

Jane Fonda has been married three times, including marriages to French filmmaker Roger Vadim, activist Tom Hayden, and Ted Turner.

She has three children, including actor Troy Garity.

Over the years, Fonda has also spoken openly about health challenges including breast cancer, osteoporosis, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In late 2022, she announced that her cancer had entered remission.

    Real Estate Portfolio

Fonda owns several luxury properties across the United States, including ranch land in New Mexico and homes in California and Georgia.

Her real estate holdings have included a Beverly Hills property she sold for $8.5 million and a luxury townhome in Los Angeles’ Century City neighborhood purchased for more than $5 million.

She also owns the sprawling Forked Lightning Ranch near Pecos, New Mexico, which spans more than 2,000 acres.
