    Born in February 1953 in Washington, D.C., Jerome Powell pursued his education at Princeton University before earning his law degree from Georgetown University. His career spans both the public and private sectors, with early roles in investment banking before transitioning into government service.

    Powell served as the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance under President George H.W. Bush from 1992 to 1993. Following his time in government, he entered private equity, working as a partner at The Carlyle Group from 1997 to 2005. He later founded his own investment firm, Severn Capital Partners, before joining Global Environment Firm in 2008 as a managing partner.

    His journey to the Federal Reserve began in 2012 when he was appointed as a member of the Board of Governors. In February 2018, under President Donald Trump, he became the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve, a role in which he has overseen monetary policy during critical economic periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, Powell is the first Fed Chair since 1987 who does not hold a Ph.D. in Economics.
