Joe Duplantier is a French-American musician, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and producer best known as the frontman and co-founder of the heavy metal band Gojira.

Born Joseph Andrew Duplantier on October 19, 1976, in Paris, France, he grew up in the southwest of France, primarily in the Biarritz and Ondres area, in a creative household influenced by his parents’ artistic backgrounds.

His mother, Patricia, was American, and his father, Dominique, is a French painter and architectural drafter.

Duplantier studied art and initially worked as a graphic designer before fully committing to music.

He has become a prominent figure in the metal scene, known for his powerful vocals, intricate guitar work, and thoughtful lyrics that often address environmental themes, humanity’s relationship with nature, and personal introspection.

    Siblings

Joe’s older sister, Gabrielle Duplantier, born in 1978 in Bayonne, France, is a fine-art photographer who has worked alongside her father on family projects and has occasionally assisted with visuals related to Gojira’s music.

She maintains a career in photography, capturing artistic imagery often tied to their family property in Ondres.

Joe’s younger brother, Mario Duplantier, born in 1981, is the drummer for Gojira and has been an integral part of the band since its inception.

    Career

Duplantier’s career in music began in the mid-1990s when he co-founded the band Godzilla in 1996 with his brother Mario, along with guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie.

The group started as a technical death metal outfit in their small hometown in southern France, drawing from influences like death metal, progressive rock, and groove-heavy sounds.

They later changed their name to Gojira, inspired by the Japanese name for Godzilla, and released their debut album, Terra Incognita, in 2001.

Under Joe’s leadership as primary songwriter, vocalist, and rhythm guitarist, Gojira evolved from underground death metal roots into a more progressive and environmentally conscious sound, blending crushing riffs, atmospheric elements, and melodic structures.

The band’s breakthrough came with albums like From Mars to Sirius (2005), which explored oceanic and ecological themes, and The Way of All Flesh (2008).

Joe has been instrumental in the band’s production, often handling recording and mixing duties, and the group relocated parts of their operations to New York City around 2011, where Joe built a studio.

Gojira’s music gained wider acclaim with releases such as L’Enfant Sauvage (2012), Magma (2016), and Fortitude (2021), the latter marking a commercial peak with strong chart performance.

Throughout his career, Joe has emphasized live performance energy, environmental activism—including support for organizations like Sea Shepherd—and veganism.

He has also explored visual arts, consistent with his early graphic design work, and collaborated with other artists while maintaining Gojira as his core project.

    Accolades

Gojira, driven significantly by Joe Duplantier’s songwriting and vision, has earned numerous accolades over its career.

The band received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance for the track “Silvera” from Magma at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

Their album Fortitude debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart, a notable achievement as one of the first French bands to do so in that category.

Mario Duplantier, Joe’s brother and bandmate, was voted Best Drummer at the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards, reflecting the technical prowess that complements Joe’s contributions.

Gojira has headlined major festivals, toured with acts like Metallica, and built a dedicated global following for their unique fusion of heaviness and melody.
