Joel Courtney is an American actor born on January 31, 1996, in Monterey, California, who rose to prominence with his breakout role as Joe Lamb in the 2011 science-fiction film Super 8.
Raised in Moscow, Idaho, after his family relocated there following his father’s retirement from the Navy, Courtney grew up in a close-knit, faith-driven household.
His parents, Dale and Carla Courtney, both schoolteachers, fostered an environment rooted in Christian values, which shaped Joel’s upbringing alongside his siblings.
His early exposure to acting came unexpectedly during a summer trip to Los Angeles in 2010, where he initially hoped to land a commercial role but ended up auditioning for Super 8.
Siblings
Joel is the youngest of four siblings, with two older brothers, Caleb and Josh, and an older sister, Chantelle.
Caleb Courtney, the eldest brother, pursued an acting career himself, which inspired Joel to explore opportunities in Hollywood.
Caleb has appeared in films such as I Am Zozo and The River Thief, the latter being a 2016 indie project filmed in Moscow, Idaho, where both Joel and his siblings Josh and Chantelle had significant roles.
Josh and Chantelle, while less documented in the public sphere, have been part of Joel’s support system, with Chantelle being the eldest sibling and Josh contributing to the family’s involvement in The River Thief.

Career
Courtney’s acting career began with a serendipitous opportunity when he visited his brother Caleb in Los Angeles at age 14.
Encouraged by Caleb’s acting coach to audition for Super 8, Joel landed the lead role after 11 callbacks, a remarkable feat for someone with no prior professional acting experience.
The film’s success catapulted him into the spotlight, and he followed it with roles in films like Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn (2014), where he played Tom Sawyer, and Mercy (2014), a Stephen King adaptation.
In 2015, he starred as Peter Moore in the CW series The Messengers, though the show was canceled after one season.
Courtney’s career gained further momentum with his role as Lee Flynn in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth trilogy (2018–2021), which became one of the platform’s most-watched films.
His performance as the lovable best friend resonated with audiences, cementing his status as a teen heartthrob.
More recently, he starred in Jesus Revolution (2023) alongside Kelsey Grammer, showcasing his versatility in faith-based narratives.
Other projects include Sick (2022) and the upcoming Half Baked 2, reflecting his ability to navigate diverse genres from comedy to horror.
Accolades
In 2012, Courtney won the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, recognizing his compelling portrayal of Joe Lamb.
The film also garnered him a nomination for a Teen Choice Award in the category of Best Ensemble Acting, highlighting his contribution to the movie’s success.
Over the years, Courtney has received additional nominations for his work, including eight in total across various awards, though specific details on these nominations are less documented.
