The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has announced the auctioning of various items including vehicles, laboratory equipment, office furniture, scrap materials, old tyres, and used batteries.
In a public notice released on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, KALRO said the auctions will be carried out by M/S Garam Investments Auctioneers and M/S Igare Auctioneers on different dates across its research centres.
According to the notice, the first auction will take place on May 6 at KALRO Headquarters in Loresho, the Veterinary Research Institute in Muguga, and the Food Crops Research Centre in Kabete starting from 10:00 am.
On May 7, the auction will proceed at the Industrial Crops Research Centre in Mwea, followed by sales at the Food Crops Research Centres in Njoro and Embu on May 8. Auctions at the Horticulture Research Centre in Kibos and the Agriculture Mechanization Research Institute in Katumani will take place on May 9.
The process will continue on May 12 at the Non-Ruminant Research Institute in Kakamega and the Arid and Range Lands Research Institute in Kiboko. On May 13, items will be auctioned at the Industrial Crops Research Institute in Mtwapa, and the final sale will be held on May 14 at the Horticulture Research Centre in Matuga.
KALRO has advised all prospective bidders to inspect the items at the various sites during working hours between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm by coordinating with the Institute or Centre Directors. It emphasized that the condition of the items is not guaranteed by KALRO or the auctioneers.
“All intending Bidders shall make a refundable bidding fee of 10% of the reserve price per Lot. Upon payment, a receipt will be issued and used to obtain a bidding number at the point of registration,” the notice reads.
Registration for interested bidders will be done at least one hour before the auction starts at each venue. The reserve price for each lot will be revealed during the bidding process, and all items will be sold on an “As-Is-Where-Is” basis.
At the fall of the hammer, the highest bidder must immediately pay at least 25% of the bid price before they can bid on the next lot. Payments will be made through a Pay Bill number provided at the auction centre by the KALRO cashier.
“In case the successful bidder fails to pay 25% at the fall of the Hammer, the item shall be sold to the second highest bidder and the highest bidder shall forfeit the bidding fee to KALRO,” the notice further states.
Once the 25% is paid, the balance must be cleared within 14 days. Failure to collect the items within the given period will attract a storage charge of Sh500 per day. If the items are not collected within 30 days after the collection deadline, the bidder will forfeit the items to KALRO.
Interested individuals can obtain a detailed auction catalogue for Sh100 from the offices of the respective Institute or Centre where the auction will be held. The catalogue can also be downloaded for free from the KALRO website at www.kalro.org or from the National Treasury portal at suppliers@treasury.go.ke.
