The Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) has invited local and international investors to develop, equip and operationalise the Kenya Leather Industrial Park (KLIP) in Machakos County.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, the council said the investment opportunity is part of its mandate and aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

KLDC said it has undertaken the development of KLIP as a flagship initiative aimed at positioning Kenya as a regional hub for leather and leather products manufacturing.

The industrial park occupies approximately 100 acres of land situated on L.R. No. 23961 in Kinanie, Machakos County.

“KLIP will provide an incentivised and favourable business environment for investors within a clearly delineated special industrial park, with access to shared and integrated infrastructure facilities, including a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP),” the council said.

The park is expected to operate as a specialised, integrated and sector-specific leather and leather products manufacturing zone, providing a one-stop-shop solution for industry players.

According to KLDC, the facility is envisioned as a sustainable and environmentally friendly, world-class leather and leather products production centre that will incorporate global best practices in industrial clustering, economic and social infrastructure, export promotion, effluent treatment and pollution control.

The council is seeking investors in various categories, including large-scale tannery operations, large, medium and small tannery developments, leather products manufacturing, large and medium leather products manufacturing, micro and small leather products enterprises and auxiliary industries.

“KLDC welcomes applications from investors both local and international with demonstrated commercial, technical and financial capacity in leather and related value chains,” the council said.

Interested investors will be required to meet the prescribed occupation criteria for their respective investment categories.

KLDC said applications will be evaluated based on the information submitted against the relevant occupation criteria, which are available on the council’s website.

Investors seeking clarification can submit their requests through klip@leathercouncil.go.ke. Additional information, updates and other investment-related details will also be published on the council’s website.

Applications can be submitted in sealed envelopes clearly marked “OPEN CALL TO INVESTORS—KENYA LEATHER INDUSTRIAL PARK” and deposited in the tender box at the KLDC headquarters, CPA Centre, fifth floor, Thika Road, Nairobi, next to KCA University.

Applications should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Leather Development Council, P.O. Box 14480-00800, Nairobi, Kenya.

Investors may also submit their applications electronically through klip@leathercouncil.go.ke, using the subject line “OPEN CALL TO INVESTORS—KENYA LEATHER INDUSTRIAL PARK”.
