Kenya and Tanzania have officially launched the Dar-es-Salaam to Mombasa Terrestrial Fiber Link, a major project aimed at improving digital connectivity across East Africa.

The new fiber optic connection was unveiled at the Lunga Lunga–Horohoro border point by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo Gitau, and his Tanzanian counterpart, Jerry William Silaa.

The project is a result of collaboration between Kenya’s ICT Authority (ICTA) and the Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTLC).

It is expected to boost cross-border communication, support regional e-commerce, and help bridge the digital divide between communities.

Speaking during the launch, CS Kabogo said the initiative reaffirms Kenya’s strong commitment to building a digital Africa by creating job opportunities, encouraging innovation across borders, and investing in infrastructure development.

“Partnerships like this are essential for strengthening digital policy, securing networks, and supporting economic growth,” Kabogo said.

Tanzania’s Minister Jerry Silaa echoed the sentiment, saying the fiber link will ensure seamless communication between the two countries and enhance system interoperability, helping businesses and institutions operate more efficiently.

Kenya’s Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, also praised the project, saying it would deliver faster internet and improve communication infrastructure throughout the region.
