    Kenya Met department warns of rains at the weekend

    The Kenya Meteorological Department cautioned Kenyans to brace for moderate to heavy downpours over the weekend, from Friday, March 14 to Tuesday, March 17.

    In its advisory published on Thursday, March 13, the weather department announced that moderate to heavy rains were expected in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

    It added the counties would experience moderate rains for the first two days of the forecast, while heavy rains were projected for the remainder of the period.

    The counties in the Highland West and Lake Victoria basin, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet, were also predicted to receive heavy rains beginning Saturday, March 15.

    Other counties that were projected to experience the same weather pattern are Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

    Residents living in the Southeastern counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties as well as inland parts of Tana River were similarly urged to prepare for heavy rains starting Saturday afternoon.

    According to Kenya Met, downpour in the South Eastern region was expected to begin in the afternoon for the next three days before it subsides on Tuesday, March 17.

    The counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County were also predicted to receive rains but in small amounts.

    Temperature Advisory

    With the onset of the rainy season, the meteorological department also cautioned Kenyans, particularly those living in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, to prepare for very cold nights.

    According to Kenya Met, these counties were expected to experience very cold night temperatures of 5°C for the next five days, beginning Friday, March 14.

    On the flip side, high daytime temperatures were expected in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and Bomet.

    They are projected to experience very high daytime temperatures of up to 35°C. Other counties also set to experience high temperatures include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.
