The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in Nairobi and surrounding areas over the next 24 hours, with a possibility of flooding.

In a statement, the weatherman said the Nairobi Metropolis is expected to receive heavy rain from 9:00am on Tuesday, October 28, to 9:00am on Wednesday, October 29.

According to the alert, some areas may receive heavy rainfall of more than 20mm, and in some parts very heavy rainfall of over 50mm within a day. Isolated thunderstorms are also expected, especially in the afternoon, evening and early morning hours.

“Expect moderate to heavy rainfall across several areas with potential localized flooding and traffic disruptions,” the statement read.

The warning follows an earlier alert from the department indicating that heavy rains currently being experienced in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley and Western Highlands will spread to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — including Nairobi — and the South-Eastern lowlands between October 23 and October 30, 2025.

The department further noted that rainfall is likely to extend to parts of northern Kenya from October 30, signaling the possible onset of the October-November-December (OND) 2025 short rains.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to remain cautious, as the heavy rains could trigger floods and landslides. The public has been urged to avoid walking or driving through moving water, stay away from open fields and trees during storms, and take other safety precautions.
