Kenya’s Harambee Stars put up a spirited fight but fell 2-1 to Gabon in a thrilling FIFA World Cup qualifier match played at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

The game, attended by President William Ruto, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, marked a historic moment as it was the first time in over six years that the national team played in a fully packed local stadium.

Despite the loss, President William Ruto commended the team’s performance, promising continued support to ensure better results in future matches.

“Harambee Stars put up a spirited fight against Gabon in today’s thrilling match. We will keep supporting our boys to ensure that they are better prepared and motivated to deliver results in the coming fixtures,” Ruto said.

Musalia Mudavadi also praised the team’s effort, describing their display as a sign of progress for Kenyan football.

“Despite the 2-1 loss to Gabon, the boys played with heart, grit, and real class. The spirit and passion our team showed is a clear sign that Kenyan football is on the rise. Heads high. We go again stronger. Hongera, team!” Mudavadi said.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga congratulated Gabon on their victory while commending Kenyan fans for turning up in large numbers to support the home team.

“We spent this afternoon watching an entertaining football match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and the Panthers of Gabon at Nyayo National Stadium. Congratulations to the visitors on their win,” Raila said.

“I am encouraged by the enthusiasm of our local fans, and it gives me hope for the future of football in Kenya.”

Gabon took an early lead in the 16th minute through former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who later doubled the advantage from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Kenya’s captain, Michael Olunga, pulled one back for Harambee Stars, but the team could not find an equalizer despite a late surge.

The win places Gabon at the top of Group F with 15 points, followed by Ivory Coast with 13 points. Kenya remains fourth in the group with six points, with their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup now facing a tough challenge.
