Kenya’s celebrated referee Aden Marwa has pulled out of the FIFA World Cup 2018 after an expose revealed that he received a bribe of $600 (Kshs60,000) bribe from Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Ghana’s fabled incognito Investigative Journalist.
Aden Marwa is the first Kenyan to have been appointed by FIFA as a Referee in FIFA World Cup 2018. The teacher-turned referee was appointed to officiate this year’s World Cup tussles after he successfully officiated the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament in Gabon.
This is not the first time the 41 year-old Maths/Chemistry teacher was first featured in high profile matches in the 2011 Fifa Under-17 World Cup.
“Kenyan referee Aden Marwa is among referees caught on camera receiving cash bribes in an investigative report by Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. He has since withdrawn from his role as an assistant referee for the FIFA world cup,” Tweeted Carol Radull, a renowned sports journalist.

Under FIFA rule, Marwa risks a lifetime ban from taking part in any football activity.
He becomes the second 2018 World Cup bound referee to be sliced on bribery claims after Saudi Football Federation banned referee Fahad al-Mirdasi for life over bribery, consequently urging Fifa to remove him from the pool of referees for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
