Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has given members of the public seven days to identify and collect 85 unclaimed bodies held at its Farewell Home mortuary.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the hospital urged relatives and other interested members of the public to identify the bodies and make arrangements for their collection within the stipulated period.
KNH warned that failure to collect the bodies within seven days would prompt the hospital to seek court authorisation for their disposal.
The hospital said the notice was issued in accordance with the Public Health Act, Cap 242, and the Public Health (Public Mortuaries) Rules, 1991.
“Pursuant to Public Health Act Cap 242 [Subsidiary Legislation Public Health (Public Mortuaries) Rules, 1991], interested members of the public are therefore requested to identify and collect the bodies within seven days, failure to which the hospital will seek authority from the courts to dispose them,” KNH said.
The hospital also provided a list of the unclaimed bodies to help members of the public establish whether their relatives or loved ones are among those held at the mortuary.
Members of the public who may have missing relatives have been urged to check the list and contact the hospital to facilitate identification and collection before the deadline expires.
KNH said the disposal process would be subject to the necessary court authorisation if the bodies remain unclaimed after the notice period.
