Another effort to salvage AFC Leopards from a possible relegation from the Kenyan Premier League is on the way this time from former Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale.

The firebrand politician admits that he feels ashamed that there is little he can do to turn around the fortunes of the floundering former giant of Kenyan football but he has promised to find a way out.

“Our community football team, AFC Leopards, is faced with relegation from the Premier League. Am ashamed to concede that there is little that I can do. Am however retreating for the next 72hrs to meditate over this and possible find a way out,” Boni Tweeted.

Ingwe, as the Leopards are nicknamed, are rock bottom in the 18-team KPL table standings with a paltry 10 points from 14 games. The team is winless in their past six fixtures and low in confidence.

With 12 KPL titles under their belt, Leopards are one of the most successful Kenyan clubs but in over 20 years the legendary club has redefined mediocrity largely due to poor management.

The team has not won the KPL title since 1998 and are known more for off the field management squabbles and hiring and firing of coaches for fun.

They are currently under Rwandan coach Andre Cassa Mbungu, their third coach in just under three months.

Boni’s intervention will not be the first from politicians, largely from the Luhya community which forms the backbone of the club’s support base, there is already a rescue team in place, led by Nairobi County Senator Johnson Sakaja, former Nairobi County Women Rep Rachel Shebesh and a number of the club’s legends is already in place.

It remains to be seen how they will work together with the National Executive to get the Leopards back clawing.
