Lars Dittmann Mikkelsen, born on May 6, 1964, in Gladsaxe, Denmark, is a renowned Danish actor celebrated for his performances across film, television, and theater.

Raised in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district before moving to the working-class neighborhood of Nørrebro, Mikkelsen grew up in a family that valued creativity, with his mother, Bente Christiansen, working as an occupational health nurse, and his father, Henning Mikkelsen, employed as a bank clerk.

Initially, Lars pursued paths far from acting, including a brief stint in the Royal Danish Army and studying biology at the University of Copenhagen.

However, inspired by his future wife, actress Anette Støvelbæk, he discovered a passion for performance through juggling and street theater, eventually enrolling at the National Theatre School of Denmark, where he graduated in 1995.

    Siblings

Lars has one sibling, his younger brother Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen, born on November 22, 1965, in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district.

Like Lars, Mads is an acclaimed actor, gaining worldwide recognition for roles such as Le Chiffre in the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), Dr. Jurgen Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), and Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022).

Raised together in Nørrebro, the brothers were influenced by their parents’ discussions of arts and culture, though neither initially planned to pursue acting.

Mads trained as a gymnast and professional dancer, studying at the Balettakademien in Gothenburg before transitioning to acting through the Århus Theatre School.

    Career

Mikkelsen’s career began unconventionally, with early years spent as a street performer in European cities like Paris, Munich, and Moscow, mastering juggling, fire breathing, and pantomime.

At 27, he shifted to professional acting, debuting in the 1995 play Dracula at the Aalborg Theater.

His early theater work, spanning over 40 plays by 2012, laid a strong foundation for his screen career.

Mikkelsen gained international acclaim for his role as Troels Hartmann in the Danish crime series The Killing (2007–2012), which marked a turning point, leading to roles in other Danish dramas like Those Who Kill and Borgen III.

His international breakthrough came with portrayals of complex villains, including Charles Augustus Magnussen in Sherlock (2014) and Russian president Viktor Petrov in House of Cards (2015).

Mikkelsen’s versatility shines in his role as mage Stregobor in The Witcher (2019) and as Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels (2016–2018) and the live-action series Ahsoka (2023).

His film credits include Headhunter (2009), What No One Knows (2008), and When Animals Dream (2015), while his voice work extends to Danish dubs for Disney films like Tangled and The Lion King (2019).

    Accolades

In 2011, Mikkelsen received the Reumert Prize of Honour for his contributions to Danish theater, acknowledging his extensive stage work.

His portrayal of Johannes, a conflicted clergyman in the Danish series Herrens Veje (Ride Upon the Storm), earned him an International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in 2018, highlighting his ability to deliver emotionally intense performances.

Mikkelsen also won the Robert Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Headhunter (2009), a testament to his commanding screen presence.

In 2003, he was honored with the Olaf Poulsens Mindelegat for his early contributions to Danish acting.

Additionally, in February 2017, Queen Margrethe II knighted him with the Knight’s Cross, recognizing his cultural impact.
