    Leonardo Genoni is a Swiss professional ice hockey goaltender, widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the Swiss National League (NL).

    Born on August 28, 1987, in Semione, Switzerland, he has built an illustrious career entirely within his home country, earning a reputation for athleticism, composure under pressure, and consistent excellence in the butterfly style.

    Genoni catches left-handed and has been a cornerstone of both club and national team success for nearly two decades.

    Siblings

    Leonardo comes from a hockey-oriented family and has two brothers who also played the sport.

    His brother Gaetano Genoni was a forward, while his younger brother Tiziano Genoni played as a defenceman.

    The siblings grew up immersed in ice hockey, with Leonardo emerging as the standout professional among them.

    Career

    Genoni began his professional journey in the mid-2000s, making his debut with the GCK Lions in the Swiss League as a prospect for the ZSC Lions.

    He broke through in the NL with HC Davos, where he earned the NL Youngster of the Year award in his rookie season and quickly established himself as a reliable starter.

    Over the years, he moved between top Swiss clubs, including stints with HC Davos, SC Bern, and later EV Zug, where he continues to play as of the 2026/27 season.

    Known for his durability and clutch performances, Genoni has been a mainstay for the Swiss national team, representing the country at multiple IIHF World Championships, Olympics, and other international tournaments.

    Despite never playing in the NHL, he has thrived domestically and on the international stage, often delivering standout performances against stronger nations and helping elevate Switzerland’s competitiveness in global hockey.

    Accolades

    Genoni has won the Swiss NL championship seven times with three different teams: HC Davos (2009, 2011, 2014), SC Bern (2017, 2019), and EV Zug (2021, 2022).

    He has also claimed the Jacques Plante Trophy as the league’s top goaltender multiple times and earned NL MVP honors.

    Internationally, Genoni has secured silver medals at the IIHF World Championship on several occasions, including standout tournament performances where he was named MVP.

    He has also won the Spengler Cup twice and holds numerous records for shutouts and saves in major competitions.
