Lou Costello was an American comedian, actor, and entertainer who had an estimated net worth of $250,000 at the time of his death in 1959. Adjusted for inflation, that is equivalent to approximately $2.3 million today.

Costello is best remembered as one half of the legendary comedy duo Abbott and Costello, alongside Bud Abbott. Together, they became some of the highest-paid entertainers in the United States during the 1940s, dominating radio, film, stage, and television. Their famous comedy routine, “Who’s on First?”, remains one of the most celebrated sketches in entertainment history.

Although the pair earned millions during their careers, financial mismanagement, heavy spending, and tax problems significantly reduced their fortunes later in life.

    Early Life

Lou Costello was born Louis Francis Cristillo on March 6, 1906, in Paterson, New Jersey.

He was the son of Sebastiano Cristillo, a silk weaver and insurance salesman originally from Italy, and Helen Rege, who was of Italian, French, and Irish ancestry.

As a student at Public School 15, Costello excelled in athletics, particularly basketball. His impressive basketball skills were later showcased in the 1945 comedy Here Come the Co-Eds, where he performed many of his own trick shots.

Growing up, Costello admired silent film legend Charlie Chaplin, whose work inspired him to pursue a career in comedy and acting.

    Early Career

In 1927, Costello traveled to Hollywood hoping to become an actor.

Initially, he found work as a laborer, film extra, and stunt performer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Hal Roach Studios. He also appeared in minor roles, including the Laurel and Hardy comedy The Battle of the Century.

After struggling to establish himself in Hollywood, Costello returned to the East Coast, where he worked in burlesque theater. During the Great Depression, he performed for several burlesque companies, including the famous Minskys.

It was during this period that he met fellow comedian Bud Abbott, a partnership that would change both of their careers.

    Abbott and Costello

Lou Costello and Bud Abbott first performed together in 1935 after Costello’s regular comedy partner became ill.

The pair officially formed Abbott and Costello in 1936, with Abbott serving as the straight man while Costello played the lovable, bumbling comedian.

Their national breakthrough came after joining The Kate Smith Hour radio program in 1938. It was there that they introduced their legendary “Who’s on First?” routine, which became one of the most famous comedy sketches ever created.

Their growing popularity led to appearances on Broadway before they signed with Universal Pictures.

    Hollywood Success

Abbott and Costello made their film debut in One Night in the Tropics (1940).

Their first starring success came with Buck Privates (1941), which became a major box office hit and launched the duo into Hollywood superstardom.

Between 1940 and 1956, Abbott and Costello appeared in 36 feature films, including:

    • Buck Privates
    • Hold That Ghost
    • Who Done It?
    • Pardon My Sarong
    • The Time of Their Lives
    • Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
    • Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man

During World War II, they ranked among America’s most popular entertainers and toured the country selling war bonds. Their campaign reportedly helped raise approximately $85 million in war bond sales.

They also starred in The Abbott and Costello Show, which aired on NBC and later ABC, further expanding their popularity.

    Career Earnings

Abbott and Costello were among the highest-paid entertainers of their era.

Between 1940 and 1956, their films generated more than $120 million at the box office, which is equivalent to roughly $1.8 billion today after adjusting for inflation.

The comedy duo reportedly earned around $25 million from their movie careers alone, equivalent to approximately $360 million today.

Initially, Abbott received the larger share of their earnings, but the arrangement later shifted in Costello’s favor, with the pair eventually operating under a 60-40 split benefiting Costello.

    Financial Problems

Despite their tremendous success, both comedians experienced serious financial difficulties later in life.

Tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service forced both Abbott and Costello to sell valuable assets, including their homes and rights to some of their most successful films.

Combined with declining popularity during the 1950s and poor financial management, these setbacks significantly reduced the fortunes they had accumulated during Hollywood’s Golden Age.

    Personal Life

Lou Costello married burlesque dancer Anne Battler on January 30, 1934.

The couple had four children together, although tragedy struck in 1943 when their infant son drowned shortly before his first birthday.

Costello also battled rheumatic fever during the 1940s, forcing him to take an extended break from performing.

Despite occasional tensions with Bud Abbott, the pair remained one of the most influential comedy teams in entertainment history until ending their partnership in 1957.

    Death

Lou Costello died from a heart attack on March 3, 1959, just three days before his 53rd birthday.

He was buried at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles. Tragically, his wife Anne also died of a heart attack just nine months later.

have secured his place among the most influential comedians in entertainment history.
