Machogu signals Magara as his man for 2027 Kisii Governor race

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has hinted at a possible political partnership with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Omingo Magara as he intensifies his campaign to unseat Kisii Governor Simba Arati in the 2027 General Election.

Machogu made the remarks on Sunday during a fundraiser at Nyamarambe Catholic Church, where he also vowed to confront what he described as the “cancer of goonism” that has emerged as a major political and security concern in Kisii County.

Although Machogu did not formally name Magara as his running mate, his glowing endorsement of the former South Mugirango MP is likely to fuel speculation that the two could team up to challenge Arati.

“We must bring together leaders who have experience, credibility and the interests of the people at heart. Omingo Magara is a leader I respect and we have a shared vision for Kisii,” Machogu said.

The remarks came as political activity surrounding the 2027 gubernatorial contest intensifies, with opposition leaders exploring possible alliances to avoid splitting the vote against the incumbent.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, who has declared interest in the governor’s seat, recently said he was consulting Machogu, Magara and Dr Enock Ondari on the possibility of settling on a single candidate to challenge Arati.

Magara, a former South Mugirango MP and PDP leader, has previously expressed interest in the Kisii governorship. In 2022, however, he shelved his gubernatorial ambitions and opted to contest the Senate seat.

Machogu also used the Nyamarambe gathering to condemn political violence and alleged harassment of residents and traders, promising to restore security and dignity in Kisii town if elected.

“We cannot build a prosperous Kisii when our people are living in fear. Goonism must end. Politics must never be used as a licence to intimidate, assault or harass our people,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing concern over alleged attacks on traders and motorists in Kisii town, with political leaders demanding action against individuals accused of using violence and intimidation.

The 2027 gubernatorial contest has already attracted several high-profile aspirants.

Governor Simba Arati is seeking a second term, while Machogu is preparing for another attempt after losing the 2022 election to Arati. Senator Onyonka has also declared his intention to contest the seat.

Dr Enock Ondari and Gideon Nyandiricha are among other politicians who have expressed interest in the race, with the field expected to expand as parties begin settling on candidates and negotiating alliances.

Machogu’s emerging partnership with Magara could therefore reshape the contest, particularly if opposition forces eventually agree to rally behind former Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.

For now, the emerging alliances point to an increasingly competitive gubernatorial race in which personalities, party structures and regional voting blocs are expected to play a decisive role.
